Volunteer at the Bay Area Humane Society!

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at the Bay Area Humane Society! Volunteers are a key part of our operations and we could not achieve our mission without their support. We recognize the valuable roles volunteers play and are committed to providing thorough, hands-on training and ongoing support to every volunteer. Volunteers work in a variety of different roles at the organization-from helping out with cleaning, to socializing our animals and helping out with customer service. Volunteers may volunteer during our staffed hours at BAHS Monday-Friday 8am-7pm and Saturday 8am-5pm.

The Shelter is always seeking volunteers to help give homeless pets a second chance. We offer a variety of opportunities to fit the skills and abilities of nearly any pet lover.

Becoming a Volunteer

If any of our volunteer positions look interesting to you, taking the next step to become a BAHS volunteer is easy. Just fill out and submit the Volunteer Application Form and once you are approved, our volunteer coordinator will e-mail you to confirm your registration for orientation. Volunteers are required to pay a one-time application fee of $10.00 to offset the administrative costs of running the volunteer program. Each volunteer is required to purchase a BAHS volunteer t-shirt and wear it at all times when volunteering. T-shirts are $15 each.

This mandatory orientation will provide you with background information about our mission, programs and services of the shelter. New volunteers are required to serve a minimum of 10 hours doing housekeeping duties around the shelter before animal handling is allowed. Once the 10 hours have been completed, volunteers will then receive an apron that can be used to hold animal treats. Volunteers will not be allowed to handle animals unless they have received an apron.

Volunteer Orientation is held the first Saturday of every month, unless otherwise noted see listing of dates below.  There is no orientation in December due to the holiday season.

Orientation Session 1: 10:30am - 12:00pm

Orientation Session 2: 1:00pm - 2:30pm

2013 Orientation Dates: March 2nd, April 6th, May 4th, June 8th, July 20th, August 3rd, September 7th, October 5th, and November 2nd.

Pre-registration is required. Due to the popularity of our program, orientations fill up quickly.

Family Volunteer Program - children ages 8 to 18 years

The Family Program is for families with children between the ages of 8 and 18 who want to enjoy the experience of volunteering together at the shelter as a family unit. In the family program, a parent or guardian must volunteer with the children and provide constant close supervision of the children while volunteering. All members of the family who intend to volunteer must attend orientation.

Adult Volunteer Program - ages 18+ years

You can join the Adult Program if you are 18 years or older on the day you attend orientation and you do not intend to bring children with you to volunteer.

Community Service

The Volunteer Program is not open to community service or school-mandated service at this time.

Volunteer Foster Homes:

Volunteer foster homes are critical for shelter pets with special needs. Cats, dogs, and sometimes small animals come into BAHS and need a little extra TLC in a temporary foster home to help them become healthy, happy, and ready for adoption. Our biggest need is foster homes for underaged kittens with and without moms. The health and behavior of all potential foster pets is evaluated prior to foster placement, and BAHS can provide most of the supplies (food, medications, dishes, toys, etc.). Click here for the Foster Care Manual & Application. You can then submit the application to the Foster Coordinator via fax, email, mail, or drop it off at the Bay Area Humane Society. After the application has been approved, there will be a brief orientation and tour, and then we will set you up with your first foster pet! You can contact Tania, the Foster Coordinator, at (920) 469-3110 ext. 104 or e-mail Tania@Bayareahumanesociety.com.  Whether you foster one or two at a time or a whole litter, you are making a difference to pet who will someday be someone's furry family member!

You can foster without going through volunteer orientation.

Special Events:

There are many important volunteers needed in the planning and organizing of fundraising events like Pet Walk, Bark of the Bay, and Brewfest. If you like to be creative, research pricing, ask area businesses for in-kind donations, or if you have experience in promotional planning or any aspect of fundraising, please give us a call!

Each event also depends on many volunteers helping the day of the event with set-up & take-down, registration, monitor auction tables, and much more. These events do not require a volunteer orientation. If interested, please contact Tanya Stack at programs@bayareahumanesociety.com or Abby Berken at abby@bayareahumanesociety.com
