SURRENDERING AN ANIMAL

Owners or concerned citizens may need to turn over their pets or stray animals to the Shelter. Separations of animals and their owners can be very traumatic events, and the Shelter staff try to provide empathy and caring during the transition process. A separate entrance titled “Admit” is located to the right of the main entrance and should be used by anyone bringing an animal to the Shelter.

For customers surrendering their pet(s), there is a minimum requirement of a $20 donation ($35 for litters) to help cover our costs. BAHS cares for 6,000 animals per year, and each pet that is cared for at the shelter costs an average of $20 per day. These costs include caring for the animal (veterinary costs, vaccinations, medications, supplies, grooming and staff time) and housing the animal (building maintenance, lights, heat, air conditioning, etc).

Staff will ask for your aid in filling out the appropriate animal sheet with primary information (name, address, location, pet specifics, etc.) and the behavioral sheet to better help us find a home for the animal.

We do have an area to drop off animals after the Shelter is closed. You are welcome to use this area when bringing in an animal, however PLEASE make certain to fill out the paperwork so that we can find the animal a new home.

BITE CASES

A BITE is considered ANYTHING which breaks the skin and draws blood. A cat scratch if severe will require a quarantine also. Cats harbor much bacteria in their mouths making bites and scratches easily infected. Bite cases are also brought into the Admit area.

Bite cases require a $308.48 fee. The fee includes charges for a 10-day quarantine/boarding of the animal, completion of a bite report as required by law and three (3) bite checks by a licensed Veterinarian. A bite report must accompany any bite case at the time of Admit.

If the animal is a stray, the fees are not charged to the person bringing the animal in. All that will be required is the address where the animal was found and the bite report.

No Wildlife can be admitted to the Shelter.
If you need to surrender wildlife, check out Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary.
